Road tripping in New Zealand

Audley clients Tom and Sandra hit the classic sights and share their photography from their road trip through New Zealand.

Tom and Sandra traveled with Audley to New Zealand in February. Their trip was designed by country specialist Matt. Below they tell us more about the highlights of the trip, as well as share some of their favorite pictures.

On driving in new zealand:

Tom and Sandra found it to be the best way to see a lot, without missing out on views between point A and B.

“The roads are well marked, traffic laws are easy to figure out, and getting used to driving on the left only takes a day or two to get used to.”

Days spent driving should be considered a part of the experience, as Tom and Sandra found they were stopping multiple times a day to soak in the sights and take pictures.

On excursions:

Tom and Sandra covered a lot of ground in their trip and experienced many of the best excursions that Audley offers. Some of the highlights included kayaking in Hahei, visiting to the hot springs in Orakei Korako, navigating a gondola ride and the redwood nighttime tree walk in Rotorua, seeing the glowworm caves in Waitomo, and completing a strenuous but immensely rewarding hike to the top of Tongariro Crossing.

On the best meal:

While in Kaikoura, they visited Nin’s Bin for their famous crayfish. It did not disappoint! The structure is simple – a small trailer, but Nin’s Bin serves up the freshest crayfish in the area. Simple and flavorful, you choose your crayfish, they cut it in half, and serve it to you to your preference – cold or warmed with garlic butter. Paired with a crisp Sauvignon Blanc and views of the ocean on a sunny day – what could be better?!

On the wine:

One of their favorite days was a biking wine tour at a vineyard in the Marlborough region of Blenheim. The scenery is stunning and their guide Hugo was extremely knowledgeable. A highlight for them was the ability to purchase and ship home their favorite wines from the different vineyards. After the tour, you can fill out a form, choose your favorite wines from the day, and a case is shipped to your home packed by each individual vintner. A little bit of New Zealand waiting on your doorstep, and a great way to cure some jet lag.
